Benchtop Damage Is Usually Repairable — Without Replacing the Whole Surface
The most common reason people contact us about a benchtop is a chip on the edge of a stone island, a burn mark on a laminate surface, or scratches around the sink from years of use. In most cases these are repairable on-site in a single visit, without removing the benchtop or engaging a kitchen renovation contractor.
We work on all benchtop materials used in Sydney homes — laminate and Formica, engineered stone (Caesarstone, Silestone, Smartstone), natural marble and granite, solid timber, butcher block, and acrylic. The repair method differs depending on the material, and we carry the appropriate compounds and tools for each.
Laminate and Formica Benchtop Repair
Laminate is the most common benchtop material in Sydney rental properties and older homes, and it sustains predictable damage: chips from impact, burn marks from hot pots placed directly on the surface, swelling edges where water has penetrated around the sink, and scratches from food preparation.
Repairing laminate requires matching both the base colour and the surface pattern — most laminates have a printed texture that gives them the appearance of stone or timber. We fill the damaged area with a colour-matched compound, then hand-paint the pattern over the repair before applying a topcoat matched to the sheen of the surrounding surface. A repair that matches the colour but not the pattern or sheen is still visible — the pattern replication is what makes the difference.
Stone Benchtop Chip and Crack Repair
Edge chips on engineered stone are extremely common, particularly at corners and around sink cutouts where the material is unsupported. A dropped pot or a heavy object catching the edge is usually all it takes.
We rebuild the missing section using a stone-matched compound, shape it to the original edge profile, then polish it to the same finish as the surrounding stone. For surfaces with distinctive veining — marble, some engineered stone ranges — we replicate the vein pattern by hand across the repair area. The colour matching is done on-site against your actual benchtop rather than from a product code, which produces a more accurate result.
Surface cracks and scratches on polished stone can often be re-polished without filling, depending on depth. We assess each case before deciding on the repair method.
Timber Benchtop Repair
Solid timber and butcher block benchtops are durable but vulnerable to water damage around the sink, heat marks from pots, and deep scratches from knives and appliances.
Water staining on timber typically appears as dark discolouration where moisture has penetrated the finish and reacted with the wood tannins. We treat the stain, re-fill the grain if needed, and refinish the affected area to match the surrounding timber in both colour and sheen. For heat marks, the approach depends on depth — surface scorching can often be re-sanded and refinished locally, while deeper burns that have charred the timber itself may require filling before finishing.
Knife scratches across a cutting area are addressed with localised filling and refinishing. We match the wood species and the existing finish — oiled, lacquered, or waxed — rather than applying a generic topcoat.
End-of-Lease Benchtop Repairs
Benchtop damage is one of the most disputed items at end-of-lease inspections in Sydney. A chip or burn mark that the tenant considers minor is often flagged by the property manager as requiring full replacement — at a cost significantly higher than a professional repair.
We carry out end-of-lease benchtop repairs across Sydney regularly, working to a standard that satisfies most property managers. We can usually schedule within 24 to 48 hours and complete the repair in a single visit. If you are a tenant dealing with an upcoming inspection, or a property manager looking to resolve a dispute without a full replacement, contact us for an assessment.
Our service covers Greater Sydney including the CBD, Inner West, Eastern Suburbs, Northern Suburbs, Western Sydney, and the Hills District.
